Many people don’t realize how creative we can be with egress windows. There are the molded window wells of various standard sizes that most of us are familiar with, but we can also use landscaping blocks and other materials to build the walls of the egress well in just about any shape or size.
As part of a basement remodeling project we are currently working on in Dane County, we recently installed this nice big egress window and window well. The window well is built with landscaping blocks. For drainage, we added drain tile down to the footing drain tile, tying into the existing drain tile system already there. We then backfilled the inside of the well area with clear stone.
Egress windows increase your property value and salability of your home. They let natural light (and air) into your basement making the living space more enjoyable. An egress window increases safety by adding another fire escape to your home and therefore the ability to add another bedroom to your home.
