The method of combining Spray foam and fiberglass batts is used these days to maximize performance and minimize cost. Many people are familiar with closed-cell spray polyurethane foam insulation. Spray foam may be the best insulation available today, but it is expensive when used exclusively. Spray foam has the added benefits of air-sealing walls and providing a vapor barrier in addition to insulating. Spray foam is also an excellent sound insulator. Fiberglass batt insulation had been the most common insulation method in the past because it is very cost effective. While being cost effective, it does not provide the necessary sealing for an air-tight envelope. Hammer Builders prefers the flash and batt method as it provides it all, but at a lower cost than using spray foam alone. Flash and batt starts with a thin flash coat of foam sprayed against the inside of the sheathing. The remainder of the framing cavity is then filled with fiberglass. This system can save up to $2 per sq. ft. over the cost of using foam exclusively. Please see the video demonstrations. The first one shows flashing with spray foam and the second shows installation of batt insulation over the foam. Call Hammer Builders or email for more information on insulation methods and costs.
